earthquake zone
	the Karakoram Highway cuts through the collision zone between the Eurasian and Indian plates; the town of Pattan was the epicentre of a massive earthquake in 1974 in which entire sections of the valley wall collapsesd and buried whole villages killing thousands of people, and the village again sufferred destruction and casualties in the 2005 Kashmir earthquake
